Racers Hit Grand Prix Track for Fundraiser to Fight Cancer

Racers, supporters and volunteers of all ages hit the tracks Sunday to literally race for a cure at the First Annual East Coast Karting Championship held at Grand Prix New York in Mount Kisco.

“We had a nice turnout, more than 150 racers came to race today,” said Ride for Kids Task Force Leader and StrikeDownCancer.org Founder Jon Ford. “This entire event, everything we do at StrikeDownCancer.org, is to find a cause and a cure.”

The day’s events raised several thousands of dollars for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation . The proceeds will fund vital research, give grants to the nation's leading medical institutions, give scholarships to brain tumor survivors and provide family support services.

The Karting Championship began at noon – Ford and Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-Bedford) kicked off the event - and there were a total of 4 sessions. Racers with the top 20 times moved on to the finals, where they competed on the Super Track, a combination of all three tracks linked together, for a chance to become the first East Coast Karting Champion.

First place went to Steve McAleer of White Plains, who won a day of motorsports racing at the Skip Barber Racing School. Second place winner G.J. Dixon of Scarsdale received a racing package from Grand Prix New York for himself and 10 of his friends.

StrikeDownCancer.org serves as the central hub for Jon Ford and his wife Valerie’s fundraising efforts in support of Ride for Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.  Active fundraisers since 2000, the family witnessed first hand pain and unrelenting sadness brain cancer brings on a family.  In 2004, Jon’s brother, Russ, succumbed to the disease.

"We're thrilled that StrikeDownCancer.org and Ride For Kids chose our facility for the first East Coast Karting Championship," said Nat Mundy, co-founder and VP of GPNY. "While we always enjoy hosting events, it's truly rewarding to see the community join together and race on behalf of a worthwhile cause."

Grand Prix donated all proceeds from Sunday to Ride for Kids, while the Hess Corporation paid for full use of the GPNY facility. Other sponsors included Business As Usual, Locomotion Powersports, Motorcycle Mall, 103.9 WFAS (who broadcasted live from the event), Maxum Cigars, and Dennis Sports Consulting.

Mt. Kisco Firefighters Given $5k Check by Medical Group for 9/11 ...

Mount Kisco firefighters are $5,000 closer to realizing their fundraising goal for a 9/11 memorial, thanks to a donation from the Mount Kisco Medical Group.

At Monday’s Village Board of Trustees meeting, officials from the medical group came to announce the donation and present the giant check to firefighters present.

CEO Scott Hayworth,  who is the husband of Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, praised the firefighters for “putting many, many volunteer hours into this project.”

Paul Felice, who is co-chair of the fire department’s committee for the memorial, thanked the medical group, and noted that they have “been a good supporter of the fire department in the past.”

The fire department’s goal is to raise $120,000 and to dedicate the memorial on Sept. 11, 2011, the 10 anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

At Monday’s event, Felice gave an update on the memorial process, noting that construction is already taking place, and that there are plans to incorporate a steel beam from the World Trade Center – which was received earlier this month – into the memorial, although a date is not yet known.

Longtime Families, Independent Fire Company, Honored with Flag

In another honor for Mount Kisco’s firefighters, a flag that flew over a U.S. military base in Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2010 was presented to the Independent Fire Company.

The flag was flown by Scott Hughes, a 7-year army veteran and member of the Army Corps of Engineers, over Camp Stone, which is located in western Afghanistan.

Recently, Hughes’ father, John “Jack” Hughes, wrote a letter to Mayor Michael Cindrich requesting that he present the flag in honor of his family, who have been involved with Mount Kisco for generations. They include his cousins, Peter Hughes, Paul Hughes and William Stewart, who were all fire chiefs. Most of the Hughes family were members of the Independent Fire Company, while Jack Hughes, and Air Force verteran who is now a Department of Defense contractor in Texas, was a member of Union Hook & Ladder Co. #1.

When Cindrich presented the flag to the fire company, with members of the Hughes and Stewart families present, he called the flag “symbol of strength and resolve.” Noting the multigenerational participation of the families, he said Mount Kisco is blessed “with a storied tradition of family loyalty.”

Cindrich also asked that the flag be flown with the local memorial when it is dedicated. on Sept. 11, 2011.
