This record is the perfect blend of southern rock, country and smooth soul, just listen to tunes like “Codeine”, “Alabama Pines” and “Go It Alone”. Take in the powerful lyrics and absorb the smooth music and you will understand how incredible this record is. A powerful album from start to finish, and quite possibly the best damn record of 2011.WASTING LIGHT – Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and crew continue to put out simple tunes that just flat out rock. They don’t try to reinvent the wheel; they know what works and keep on doing it. This record is a little heavier, and that is a good thing. “Rope” and “White Limo” anchor a killer group of songs, and collaborations with Bob Mould, (“Dear Rosemary”) and Krist Novoselic (“I Should Have Known”) offer up a nice change of pace.
THE PALACE GUARDS – David Lowery Touring and recording with two of the most influential bands in music, what else is there for David Lowery to do? How about write and record a solo record. He has given us a record of tunes that draw from his past music and throw in a few new twists. “Raise ‘Em Up On Honey”, “Ah You Left Me” and “Baby, All Those Girls Meant Nothing To Me” are a few examples of what this record has to offer. Check it out for yourself, don’t just take my word.
FIXIN’ TO DIE – G. Love Enlisting the assistance of The Avett Bros., G. Love scaled it back and released a sparse, mellow record full of country blues that would make even the grumpiest old Mississippi blues man smile. The groovy beats have been stripped away and G.’s masterful guitar playing and lyrical prowess are allowed to shine. Check out “Heaven” and “You’ve Got To Die” and you will see what I mean.
