Couple faces murder charges in children's deaths

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) Authorities say a grand jury has indicted a couple on capital murder charges in the deaths of two young children last year.
The Mobile Press-Register reports that Heather Leavell-Keaton and her common-law husband, John DeBlase, face two counts of capital murder in the deaths of three-year-old Chase DeBlase and four-year-old Natalie DeBlase.
The indictment states that the defendants intentionally caused the children's deaths by "poisoning and/or asphyxiation and/or starvation and/or dehydration."
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich declined to discuss specifics about evidence in the case, but said it is the "most vile case I've ever been associated with."
DeBlase's attorney, James Sears, could not immediately be reached for comment. An attorney for Leavell-Keaton, James Vollmer, said he had been expecting the charges and was not surprised by them.
FORMER COMMISSIONER ARRESTED
Former Marshall County commissioner arrested
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) Former Marshall County Commissioner Timothy Frank Bollinger has been arrested and charged with theft, violating state ethics and campaign finance laws and with using his position for personal gain.
Attorney General Luther Strange said Friday that the 53-year-old Bollinger was indicted on the charges Friday by a Marshall County Grand Jury. He was released from the Marshall County Jail on bond Friday afternoon. The amount of his bond was not immediately released.
Bollinger did not return a phone message left at his home. It was not known if he had an attorney.
Strange said in a news release that Bollinger faces various charges, including theft of musical instruments and a 28-volt generator.
Bollinger was a candidate in 2010 for the Republican nomination for the Alabama House District 26 seat.

Ala. mental health department announces layoffs
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) The Alabama Department of Mental Health is laying off 582 workers across the state.
That includes some 400 workers at Partlow Developmental Center in Tuscaloosa. The department had announced earlier that Partlow would close later this year.
Mental Health Commissioner Zelia Baugh blamed the layoffs on the loss of federal stimulus money.
