Center Roughriders christen new artificial Turf with youth football camp
CENTER, TX (KTRE) – High school football is only weeks away from starting in East Texas, and one might think, that is all coaches are thinking about these days. Not so for Center High School coaches who on Wednesday took time out of their busy schedule to host a youth football camp.
The football camp is going on as crews rush to complete renovations at Roughriders Stadium. The new field turf is ready to go and the rest of the project should be ready soon.
Youngsters in grades 3 through 8 are among the first to play on the new surface since it was changed from grass to artificial turf. In addition to the football stadium renovations, improvements have also been made to the softball and baseball fields.
The coaching staff is excited to teach the future Roughriders the benefits, fundamentals and fun of football. "Everybody knows this is the X-box generation, I have one at home myself that has iPads and everything else. They have so much at their fingertips, so I think it is great that they have a chance to come out and throw a football," said Tracy Adair, Camp Coordinator and Assistant Coach.
"It's extremely important, one to get them out and about because kids don't play like they used to. But secondly, get them tied into Center football, wanting to grow up rough riders," added Kevin Goodwin, Athletic Director and Head Coach. Goodwin said the participates will receive a camp t-shirt, learn the rules of football, do scrimmages and drills, learn team building skills. Breakfast and lunch are also provided for the campers.
The camp ends Thursday at 1 pm.
The Center High School football team will begin Fall practice on August 1st. The season opens against Rusk on August 26th. Look for exclusive interviews with players and coaches once 2-a-days start right here at KTRE.com and on KTRE's East Texas News.

Youth Softball Coaching Clinic: Girls Softball - Conditioning ...
Girls' softball - like any other sport - requires both practice drills to hone technique on the field and a conditioning program to increase strength, enhance performance, and decrease the risk of injury. An effective conditioning program will include flexibility training, cardiovascular training, weight training, and agility training. Players who train hard will become more well-rounded athletes and be more physically and psychologically prepared for competition. The first step in a conditioning program should be flexibility training to get muscles loose and warmed-up for the rest of the training session. Start with a couple minutes of light jogging, then move on to stretching. An effective stretching program starts with the ankles and moves up throughout the body, including the calf muscles, hamstrings, quadriceps, back muscles, shoulders, neck, and arms. Encourage athletes to join a gym that provides guidance and equipment. Classes in aerobics, spinning, and kickboxing all present a great endurance workout. Players who prefer to work out alone can use treadmills, Stairmasters, and elliptical machines. Those who do not want to join a gym can participate in a running or biking program that provides regular endurance training. While softball players want to primarily build up muscles in the legs, torso, abdominals, and arms, they should also work the rest of the body, including the back, shoulders, chest, and wrists. Because individual players are at different stages in development and have distinct body types, it is difficult to present one universal weight training program. Athletes should work with their coach or a trainer to develop a program that works for them. Agility training increases players' ability to execute moves quickly and effectively on the field. Athletes should focus on increasing balance and developing acceleration. Exercises that include line jumps, quick sprints, lateral maneuvers, backpedaling, and bleacher steps will increase balance and explosiveness. Softball players whose bodies quickly and accurately respond in any situation will be an invaluable asset to their team.
