Gamers show way on demise of favourite products
Sony Online Entertainment has announced it will be shutting down the MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) Star Wars Galaxies on December 15.
The game has been running since 2003 and its successor, the very hip-sounding The Old Republic, is imminent, so such a move seems understandable. Except some fans are not happy about it, and as we all know, when Star Wars fans are displeased, they like to keep their opinions very much to themselves.
Just kidding. According to VentureBeat, 2500 players have petitioned Sony to turn it into a free-to-play game funded by the sale of in-game pretend things. And others are threatening to bring a lawsuit against Sony.
Defrag feels for the fans.
Goodness knows, if we could spend half our life in the movie Die Hard, we would and if anyone tried to take that away from us, we would be on the extreme side of miffed.
But we're pretty sure you can't sue a company because they stop making something you really like. Otherwise, Defrag would have had Nestle in court years ago, as part of a class-action suit seeking damages for the emotional trauma caused when they changed the recipe for the Milo Bar and introduced that new abomination.
We mean, seriously, every other chocolate bar on the market now comes in a zillion varieties, with a different kind of nut or a slight variation in the shape of the bar; couldn't they have kept making both? Or did they have to make room in their product schedule for Milo porridge, which sounds kind of disturbing for reasons we can't quite pinpoint. Also, how come Defrag can't buy Milo B-Smart any more? The swines.
Err, anyway, where were we? Oh, that's right: suing people for annoying us. We hope the Star Wars people are successful in their mission, because that's a precedent we could make use of.
For instance, we'd sue half the publishers of half the news organisations reporting on Justin Timberlake buying a minority stake in the sale of MySpace last week. Sure, it's an entertaining story, especially since Timberlake played tech entrepreneur Sean Parker in The Social Network, which invites lots of jokes along the line of "what, he also voiced Artie in Shrek the Third; does that mean he can be king too now?"
But really, headline writers, couldn't we have had a few less variations on the one theme? Nearly every one played on the title of 2006 single SexyBack, with headlines along the lines of "Timberlake to bring the sexyback to MySpace" or "Timberlake to bring MySpace back". Would it have killed someone to go with "Timberlake 'N Sync with MySpace" or "Is Timberlake justified in trying to save MySpace?
