3 CDL Test Mistakes & How To Fix Them | eGears Blog

Over the last few years, we’ve talked with people that have made plenty of mistakes when it comes to studying for the CDL test.  For some, not passing the CDL test is only a minor setback.  For others, it can mean losing a job or not being able to receive a promotion.  This is a big deal and can create some real problems.

Fortunately, 99% of these mistakes can be grouped into 3 categories and they all can be avoided .

1. Not Planning Ahead Make sure you call ahead to schedule your test at least a week in advance.  Ask the testing site what type of documents you will need to bring with you and how much the test will cost.  On test day, make sure you eat a balanced breakfast, arrive to the BMV or state approved test site at least 30 minutes early, and allow 2 hours for the CDL skills test.  This will ensure you aren’t rushed and can focus on the most important thing – passing the test!

2. Studying Incorrect or Incomplete Information It’s important to fully understand what type of vehicle you will be driving and what type (class) of CDL you need to obtain .  Too often we talk with people that aren’t really sure what they should be studying.

It’s also important to note that there is a ton of information available online such as CDL practice tests and other sites claiming to have all of the CDL test questions and answers.  The truth is no one other than the BMV knows what is going to be on the CDL test that you’ll take.  Remember, anyone with a video camera can post a video on YouTube and call it a pre-trip inspection video .  That doesn’t always mean it’s going to be accurate or complete.

How to Fix It Take the time to do your research.  Call the BMV or state approved testing site and confirm what you need to study for the actual test.  Obtaining a CDL manual is also a great start.

Searching online for study resources such as CDL study guides and practice tests is also a good idea.  Be sure to pay attention to the quality of the product.  Remember, free does not always mean high quality.  Also, find out if a real CDL instructor was involved in the development of the study material and if any companies or schools use it.  Most online CDL training is not going to break the bank and it’s definitely worth it to invest some money when it comes to having a chance to start or improve your career.
