A sorry day for Murdoch as the favoured fall

Hinton, 67, had been watching with concern from New York, where he ran The Wall Street Journal and its parent company, Dow Jones, as his protegee Rebekah Brooks sank under the weight of the News of the World phone hacking scandal.

Early the following morning, Murdoch was out in a tracksuit in Hyde Park with his blonde personal trainer, to the delight of the paparazzi dogging his every move.

Later, Hinton was summoned to a meeting at Murdoch's apartment in St James's where the News Corporation chairman and chief executive, his advisers and members of his family were putting together a new defence strategy after a tumultuous week that had ended in the closure of the 168-year-old Sunday tabloid.

For many years, there has been speculation over which of the key Murdoch children, Elisabeth, Lachlan or James, would one day control their father's empire. They were now gathering to shore it up.

Eldest son Lachlan flew in from Sydney. Public relations company Edelman came in full time.

The closure of the NOTW had failed to relieve the pressure on the patriarch. His global media interests and his British newspaper subsidiary, News International, owner of The Sunday Times, were conflated into one target -- Murdoch -- by enemies who scented weakness and were determined to inflict fatal wounds.

Above all, they believed that, as a result of the public outcry, they now had the strength and ammunition to prevent News Corporation, the American-based parent company, from taking full control of British Sky Broadcasting. This was a campaign that the BBC, rival media groups and politicians had been whipping up with growing ferocity since Murdoch made the bid last year.

Public anger had been stoked by new revelations about the alleged illegal activity at the NOTW. It was claimed that a senior executive at the newspaper had approved payments to at least two royal protection officers for the phone numbers of members of the royal family and their friends. The contacts book is reported to have been sold for about pound stg. 1000.

It was claimed by the Daily Mirror that NOTW journalists had tried to get hold of the mobile phone numbers of 9/11 victims. The Mirror provided no evidence but the claim spread to the US with potentially catastrophic implications for News Corporation if it turned out to be true.

The immediate issue facing Murdoch and his advisers on Tuesday, however, was Brooks's future as chief executive of News International. She had been editor of the News of the World in 2002 when Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator working on behalf of the newspaper, hacked into the mobile phone of missing schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Get Off Your Horse! « The People Skills Blog

There is a story told that many years ago, a rider on horseback came across a squad of soldiers who were trying to move a heavy piece of timber.

The rider noticed that a well-dressed corporal was standing by, commanding the men to “heave.”

The piece of timber was just a little too heavy for the group of men to move, however.

“Why don’t you help them?” the rider quietly asked the corporal.

“Me?” the corporal responded with shock in his voice. “Why, I’m a corporal, sir!”

The rider then dismounted and took his place with the soldiers. Smiling at them, he said encouragingly, “Now, all together boys – heave!”

The big piece of timber moved easily with the help of one more man.

The stranger then mounted his horse. As he prepared to ride on, he said to the corporal, “The next time you have a piece of timber for your men to handle corporal, send for the commander-in-chief.”

It was only then that the corporal and his men realized that the helpful stranger was none other than George Washington .

This story helps me remember a few things –

That whatever position I am given or think I deserve – is less about the position and more about serving – That it may take only a little more effort, or one more person – to move the obstacle from a path That when a team works together, it’s more inspiring and produces better results

I wish for you and for me enough toil or trouble so that we become ever better because we worked through it.
