LETTER: Leave phone at home while driving

I am writing this in hopes that it will save a life and potentially more than one life.

I was stopped at the light on Central and 27th streets on July 17 around 6:20 p.m., when I was rear-ended by another car driven by a female. Just before she hit me, I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw this person’s head down, typing away on her phone without realizing that she was about to hit my car, and sure enough she did.

When we got out of the cars, I confronted her about texting and driving and her lame excuse was that she was calling her daughter, when her phone was still on her hands with the keyboard out, she had a slider, black cellphone. The only thing she could say was “sorry,” by this time my little boy was so nervous and shaking from the jolt of the crash, thank God no one was seriously hurt, and thank God for seat belts.

After picking up a front plate that had fallen from her car, we agreed to get off the main road to wait for the cops, since I was already with the 911 service on my phone, but then she took off.

I drove after her, yes, I know it was dangerous, but she ran two or three red lights and about six stop signs before I decided that it was not worth putting my son in more danger, so I just gave up. All this time I was with the 911 service on my phone, guiding them so that the police could be there to catch this person, Yeah right. Not in Columbus, unbelievable how in a town small as Columbus, police can’t get anywhere within 30 minutes, it takes 15 minutes at the most to go across Columbus.

I am writing this, hoping a family member or anyone who knows about this person does something about her texting and driving before she kills herself and potentially someone else with her texting and driving, and her irresponsibility to just take off from the scene of a crash.

And to those individuals that think that they are too good a driver and that they can text and drive without getting into a crash, you are wrong! It can, and eventually will happen to you.

To top it off, I was told by the police officer who got to where I had parked, (about 30 minutes after), that I had to go to the police station and pick-up the police report and take it to my insurance company within 30 days, or my license would be taken away, and I had to go to court, there I was, all shaken up, my son was so nervous and shaken up, my car had the rear bumper damaged, and I was being told my license could be suspended!
