Minute's silence in memory of Workington Town star Cec Thompson

The 85-year-old, who played for the club from 1953-1960 and was one of the first black rugby league players to represent Great Britain, died on Tuesday.

After being forced to retire from playing in 1960 following a serious knee injury in the 1958 championship final he took up coaching in Barrow.

During his career he played 294 games and scored 64 tries, playing in the second row and as a winger. Of those, 192 appearances and 55 tries were for Workington Town. He also played for Hunslet.

He later made a career change, returning to education, which he had left at 14, to gain a degree and become a teacher.

Through teaching he continued his passion for the sport by becoming a leading light in the Students’ Rugby League.

He was also the owner of west Cumbrian cleaning business TC Thompson, which he sold in 2002, and had a second home in Papcastle, although he lived in Chesterfield.

Workington Town chairman Dave Bowden said: “Everybody at the club knew of Cec Thompson, not just for his playing ability.

“He was one of those characters where the man was almost more important than the player. What he did off the pitch and what he achieved in life was amazing.

“He overcame a lot of obstacles and gained a lot of respect for that. He was very articulate and clearly a very intelligent man. We are all saddened to hear of his passing.”

Recently retired Rugby Football League president Bev Risman, whose father Gus signed Thompson to Workington Town, said: “Rugby league as a whole has got a great debt to Cec in the way that he played and what he did for the game after he retired.

"I’m very grateful for the work he did with the Students’ Rugby League. He was getting himself educated after he finished his playing days and he recognised the importance of education in all sports and walks of life.

“He got this going and helped introduce rugby league in universities. It’s now an incredibly successful organisation.

“He was an amazing chap. He was very extrovert. He promoted everything to do with his ethnic origins and got people to recognise that black people could play a big part in sport in this country.

“He was no shrinking violet. He was the centre of attention virtually everywhere he went.”

Workington Town has applied to the Rugby Football League for permission to hold a minute’s silence ahead of Sunday’s match.
