Lehigh Valley experts share tips for dealing with heat wave
As the Lehigh Valley braces for a heat wave that is expected to bake the region over the next few days, some local experts share some advice on dealing with the extreme temperatures.
The hot and humid weather will start today and could creep into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Heat index values are forecast to be about 110 degrees on Friday afternoon, the weather service said.
The weather service says nighttime hours won't offer much relief, only dropping to the mid- and high-70s.
Douglas Gonzalez, superintendent at The Club at Morgan Hill golf course in Williams Township, will be working against the heat for the next few days. That means Gonzalez and his crew will be hand watering tees and greens.
The crew will target "hot spots" on the greens: areas with a lot of slope, which quickly drain water. Wetting the greens down keeps the grass cool and stops sun damage, Gonzalez said.
Jackie Bolig, the golf course’s director of marketing and sales, said the club will hand out iced towels to its golfers.
Place said a short trip in a car that's not already cool can overheat a dog. Leaving a dog in a car, even with windows down, is "never, ever" a good idea, Place said.
Even a short walk can be overwhelming for your furry friend. Place recommends walking as early as possible and as late as possible. She also says to watch out for hot asphalt, which can cause thermal burns on paw pads.
Going for dips in a pool or creek can soothe dogs, but afterward owners need to be careful because wet fur cuts down on air flow, Place said.

The course will also have a public 7:30 a.m. shotgun start to beat the heat, Bolig said.
Not a golfer? Gonzalez shared some of his grass growing wisdom. He says watering at night is best. Water quickly evaporates during the day and doesn’t penetrate down to the roots. That’s where the water needs to go for a pristine-looking lawn, Gonzalez said.
His last tip is probably the easiest one to use.
If the forecast is accurate, Piazza said it will be the worst heat that she can remember. That’s not great news for the farm’s 40 acres of vegetables.
Piazza said her sweet corn crop gets overhead water, which is usually shut down about midnight. The other vegetables benefit from a drip irrigation system that takes the sun out of the equation.
