North Bay Village group seeking mayor recall
A group of North Bay Village residents seeking to recall Mayor Corina Esquijarosa submitted 414 signatures supporting Esquijarosa’s ouster on Tuesday — well over a hundred more than the signatures required under state law.
The submission is only one of many hurdles the group faces before forcing a recall election.
In recent months, Esquijarosa has faced scrutiny over claiming a homestead exemption on a Miami property, even though the property had been rented out and the mayor listed a North Bay Village address as her primary residence in city records.
On Tuesday, city activist and former commissioner Al Blake, chairman of the recall committee, turned in the signatures.
“These petitions represent the large amount of residents who want Mayor Corina Esquijarosa removed from the office of mayor for her dishonesty to the taxpayers,” said Blake.
Esquijarosa declined to be interviewed, but responded in writing to the Herald following the submission of signatures.
“I am disheartened that this recall effort has been contrived by malicious and mean-spirited persons who supported my opponent(s) in the mayoral election,” she said via email on Wednesday. “While this recall effort is distracting, expensive, and unwise, diverting important attention away from the pressing issues of the day, I put my faith in the wisdom of the electorate."
North Bay Village Clerk Yvonne Hamilton will submit the signatures to the county’s supervisor of elections for verification.
According to Florida law, Blake needed at least 275 signatures of North Bay Village’s 2,748 registered voters to force a recall election. If at least 275 signatures are verified, Esquijarosa will have five days to submit a statement in her defense.
Then Blake and his group have to circulate a second petition, this one containing Esquijarosa’s statement, and gather 412 signatures — or 15 percent of the electorate. Only after the final round of signatures are verified by the county can a recall election be scheduled.
The recall process first started in June 2, when Blake filed a Statement of Grounds for the Recall of North Bay Village Mayor Corina Esquijarosa. State law requires the memo before residents can begin collecting signatures to recall the mayor. In April, the county’s property appraiser’s office warned Esquijarosa that it would file a lien against the Miami property under her name if she did not pay $3,109.70 in back taxes and penalties. She also failed to include this property on her state-mandated financial disclosure forms when she ran for mayor.
