About a year ago I purchased the Pelican 1650 hard case. At the time I was travelling with my Canon 500mm f/4 lens in its original case along with a second smaller Pelican 1520 case, a shoulder bag, laptop bag and a Lowepro Vertex 200 AW . Moving around was awkward and hard on the back with all the lifting and loading. At this stage with the amount of gear I am travelling with it becomes more a matter of logistics rather then just loading a camera bag and setting off. Thus, I set out to find a new Pelican case that would combine the backpack, shoulder bag and Canon 500mm case into one.
A look on the net showed a surprising lack of reviews on cases and camera bags in general. It seems that you can find a good review on a camera or lens but it’s difficult to find a good review on something to carry it in and considering the prices you pay for quality gear its important that you take care of it and transport it properly. It doesn’t take much to scratch, ding, dent, or break a camera or lens.
Overview
Pelican cases are made of a hard molded plastic shell durable enough to handle anything that comes its way. There are stories on the pelican site of the different kinds of disasters that Pelican cases have survived. One read of these stories convinced me that this was the case to hold my precious gear. Any case that will float on water and survive a helicopter explosion has me sold.
While not as dramatic my experience with Pelican case survival was during a flight with Air Canada. While waiting in the terminal lounge for the plane to get ready I watched the baggage cart pull up. There on the front was my Pelican case ready and waiting to get loaded. Then a second baggage cart came around the corner and collided with the luggage cart holding my case directly on the corner where my case was sitting. From the photo you can see that the impact was strong enough to break the weld holding the front side of the cart to the bottom. My pelican cases were pushed hard up into the rest of the luggage on the cart. When I reached my destination and checked the case everything had survived without damage. Though not as dramatic as some of the Pelican stories it does highlight that anything could happen at any time.
The outside of the case is rough to help with grip, even when wet. There are well placed ribs to protect the hinges and latches. Ridges on the top of the lid match with small square feet on the bottom of the case to help when stacking multiple cases (even between different models). For example, the feet on the bottom of a Pelican 1520 fit into the ridges on the top of the 1650, so when stacked in transit the 1520 doesn’t slide off.
