Govt Should Implement Energy Reform Aggressively – Professor Dickson Ozokwelu
Professor Dickson Ozokwelu, is a Nigerian-born, United States-based chemical engineer and energy expert. Currently a staff of the US Department of Energy(DOE), Ozokwelu is passionate about getting Nigeria’s energy crisis resolved. In this online interview with THISDAY, he discusses issues related to how to achieve enduring stability in the power supply sector and the net impact of this on the country’s development in general.
Sir, you are specialized in the area of energy production and its efficient use. Though you are resident in the United States, you have made periodic intervention in Nigeria’s search for stable power supply. Please, tell us more about your work in the energy generation and consumption sector?
Although, I haveknowledge of fossil based power generation technologies, my expertise and experience are primarily in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
Overall, I have 35+ years of diversified engineering and management experience, spread almost evenly between entrepreneurship, government, industry and academia. For the past 11 years, I have been at US Department of Energy (US DOE) as the Lead Technology Manager for the Chemicals Portfolio in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. In this position, I play significant roles in reshaping the US government’s energy policy as well as developing and deploying energy- efficient and renewable energy technologies in key manufacturing industries in the United States, including Chemicals, Petroleum Refining and Pulp and Paper Industries.
By virtue of my position at United States Department of Energy (US DOE), I have developed expertise in national energy policies and various energy technologies, especially energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, including solar electric, solar thermal, wind, and micro hydropower. Subsequently, I have built up extensive international and US network and contacts, especially in US Energy, Chemicals, Petroleum Refining, Pulp and Paper and Power industries. As a result of my work at US DOE, I have received invitations to international speaking engagements on the subject of the similarities of technologies for industrial energy savings and pollution abatement from such organizations like The World Bank, International Flames and Retardants Conference, Birmingham UK, et cetera.
Most recently, I was the invited key note speaker at the Nigerian Society for Chemical Engineer’s (NSChE’s) 40th annual International Conference on: Harnessing and Optimizing Nigeria’s Energy Resources in the next decade (2010-2020), in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, November 18-21, 2010.
