Still trying to decompress. Only 2 days out, but getting further and further from the masses and closer to what I’m looking for out here. In Cape Cod tonight, but working my way north towards Acadia National Park. The first day was mostly just distancing myself from Brooklyn, stopping occasionally for food (12-year olds singing Adele karaoke at an Applebees)and supplies (Safety pins for my shorts whose zipper busted open). Today I reached my first National Park Area, Cape Cod National Seashore, but was pretty disappointed to find it was like most beaches along the east coast, overrun with tourists, like me. Still there was progress compared to yesterday, as I stumbled upon a barely-marked Indian burial ground as I was driving back from the seashore. There was a tiny brown historical sign that pointed to an even tinier little pathway hidden between two properties. I had to kneel down to get under all the overgrown bushes and trees that lined the tunnel-like pathway, and I then found myself at the edge of a clearing overlooking the water. There was aa old sign at the entranceway that read “ Burial ground of the Nobscussett tribe of Indians of which tribe Mashantampaine was chief “. As I entered the clearing I began to notice all kind of offerings piled on tree stumps, hanging from branches, swaying silently in the evening breeze. In the center of the site was a large stump with branches leaning against it in the shape of a crude teepee. Through the trees I could see remnants of modern residential living just along the edges of the burial ground: white lawn chairs, a covered boat, the roof of a million dollar home peering over the tops of the shivering pines, peering jealously down into this little area of protected land. I snooped around for about 20 minutes, left a modest offering, then made my way back through the tunnel of branches as the slivers of sunlight piercing the canopy began to recede. As I was exiting, I noticed more offerings hanging in the tunnel, sea-shells on strings, tiny colored beads. I felt something meaningful happened for the first time since I left yesterday, and that gives me hope that so much more is yet to come.
