Educators on break: Teacher 'brightens people's lives' at poetry slams
Rhea Carmon uses a different name outside the walls of Austin-East High School.
In her classroom, she is Mrs. Carmon, but often when she leaves, she becomes RheaSunshine.
RheaSunshine is the stage name Carmon uses when she performs her original poetry at poetry slams, in front of audiences at universities across the country and for youth groups.
"It was a pet name my mother gave me when I was younger," Carmon said. "She said my smile was like the sunshine. I took it as my stage name I want to brighten people's lives."
The 33-year-old Austin-East math teacher and former engineer has kept a poetry notebook since she was in high school and entertained people with her words for almost as long, despite her passion for math and science.
About seven years ago, she started her own spoken-word nonprofit in Knoxville to bring the expressive art form to others, especially the youth. She started Black Sunshine Arts 'N' Entertainment with another local poet, Joseph "Black Atticus" Woods.
For her, poetry and math are about as different as two careers can get.
"The structure of math, the fluidity of poetry — it gives me two sides of the coin," Carmon said.
Black Sunshine is made up of several poets who perform at local poetry slams throughout the month as well as go into schools and universities to perform for students. It sponsors the Knoxville Poetry Slam twice a month and youth poetry slams twice a year.
They perform a lot during National Poetry Month in April and Black History Month and compete in national competitions.
Their poetry performances are a bit different from typical poetry readings, she said.
"It's poetry with expression and rhythm," Carmon said. "We add points of theater to poetry so it's not boring like someone just sitting up there reading."
Some poets might dance or do arm movements, others use props. Carmon said no two spoken-word artists perform the same way
In high school, Carmon excelled at math and science but sometimes struggled with writing.
"My English teacher suggested I write poetry," Carmon said. "I didn't like English composition and to get me to enjoy words more, writing more, she suggested I write poetry."
Carmon said she is glad to have a way to fully express her thoughts and she wants to share that with others in Knoxville.
"Poetry let me find a rhythm. I am a singer and musician as well," Carmon said. "The rhythm of poetry was inviting to me.
