Going Our Way: A Canadian detour between Detroit and Washington

“With three young children, we haven’t taken a vacation in years!” says Cathy Buffington. “We’re interested in water parks or hotels with great pools, hiking in parks, and family activities. We’d like to stay in hotels where a lot of driving isn’t required.”

A nine-hour drive with three children younger than 7 is not for the fainthearted, but Cathy Buffington and Don Badrak have a plan. The University Park couple, who’ll be driving from Detroit to Washington with their kids next month, want to veer off track for a few days in Ontario as long as they’re up north. High on their wish list: play time and family attractions in Toronto, hiking and parks of all kinds, especially water parks — or at least hotels with awesome pools.

Detouring via Canada will add about four hours to the drive home, but it’s well worth it for the chance to visit two primo family destinations: Toronto and Niagara Falls. Toronto in the summer is a delight, with enough activities to keep the gang busy for a week. And visiting the falls is one of those legendary experiences that the kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Plus they get to wear those cool yellow slickers. The only question: Stay on the Canadian or the U.S. side? More on that burning controversy later.

Before you leave home, make sure that you’re up to date on border-crossing requirements. Gone are the days when you could drive into Canada just flashing a driver’s license. All U.S. citizens 16 and older now need a passport, a passport card or a Trusted Traveler card. For Trusted Traveler cards: U.S. Customs and Border Protection, www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/trusted_­trav­eler .) Kids younger than 16 just need an original or certified copy of their birth certificate.

Got all that? Here’s a suggested itinerary for a week in Ontario, with recommendations for lodging and activities. All prices are quoted in U.S. dollars.

Day 1: Drive from Detroit to Toronto, about four hours. Ontario’s capital has scads of hotels in all price ranges, but you might experience some sticker shock at downtown rates. It’s worth it to be able to walk or take public transport to attractions, though. And if you choose a place with kitchen facilities, you can avoid costly restaurant meals.

I haven’t yet visited Germany, but a friend, Julie Mainville, did in 2008. She brought me back a few pictures of the restaurant proper and a t-shirt for my collection. This Hard Rock Cafe is not an official brand licensee – not owned by Rank Group (HRC International) there are a few such independents around that operate without paying their dues to the brand.

I visited the Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls Canada on July 10th 2007 while on vacation with my family to Marineland and Canada’s Wonderland (Toronto). It is a typical HRC restaurant with the usual menu. We decided, as we were leaving on the 12th, to make a 20 minute detour in the US. We crossed the Rainbow Bridge separating Niagara Falls Canada in Ontario with Niagara Falls US in New York state. You can actually see one HRC from the other!

On Thanksgiving weekend (in Canada it was 8-11 October 2010) we took a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson New Jersey, and since we were so close (1 hour 15 minutes) we decided to go the extra mile so to speak and visit Atlantic City on a very warm Saturday afternoon. We, as a family, cannot visit a new city without visiting its Hard Rock Cafe, so we had supper there.

We celebrated Canada Day (July 1st) and the 4th of July in Massachusetts this year. We took advantage of the long weekend to go to the Six Flags New England in Springfield and visit Boston. Naturally, a supper at the Hard Rock Cafe Boston was a must. Had I been alone, I’d have also driven the extra hour and a half to stop by the Foxwoods Connecticut location as well, but it was a little tough on our itinerary.
