Green property: recycled wood

Waste craftsman Chris Knipe has a philosophical attitude to his wood furniture making. His pieces, all beautiful one-offs, are a patchwork of grains, densities, patina and shades, from pale honey through to rich, deep mahogany. Chris, who is trained in restoration and design, starts by looking at a piece of wood and asking himself: “What can I make out of this?”

We send more than two million tons of this reusable and precious natural resource to rot in landfill sites every year, according to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap). Now even the Government has woken up to this shameful statistic and in its waste review published earlier this month declared that next year it will consult on how to ban all wood from ending up in landfill sites.

Of the two million tons of wood we trash each year, at least a quarter of it – half a million tons – is easily reusable builders’ waste wood, such as old window frames, floorboards, pallets and scaffolding planks, according to the National Community Wood Recycling Project.

The project has a network of 27 collection centres throughout Britain, where anyone can take their wood waste, be it old children’s cots and bunk beds, battered furniture or garden benches. Someone, somewhere will find a use for it.

With so many uses for reclaimed wood, and demand for wood fibre growing rapidly due to the increasing popularity of biomass (wood pellet) heating, the question environmentalists are asking the Government is: why wait until next year to consult?

Richard Parrott, director of Trent Valley reclaimed wood business Cawarden Reclaim, transforms old Victorian floorboards into reproduction panelled doors, which compete very favourably with new wood doors in terms of price.

“We reuse around a thousand tons of wood every year, a mere drop in the ocean of what is landfilled,” says Richard. “It is quite time consuming to prepare reclaimed wood for reuse, we use hand-held metal detectors to find all embedded nails before we use saws to cut it to size.” He says that with the more interesting character of reclaimed wood, with its knots and richer grain, he doesn’t understand why people prefer to buy new doors, which are often a similar price.

“We also turn over more than three million reclaimed bricks a year, saving thousands of tons from landfill.

Finding Metal Bed Frames For Kids | Home and Leisure Blog

As a parent, it may not shock you to discover that children spend the majority of their time sleeping. In fact, experts usually recommend that kids get between 10 and 12 hours of sleep a night. The problems arise however, when you are trying to get them to go bed in the first place or develop a routine. One tip which may help get your kids to go bed on time and to remain sleeping through the night, is to buy new metal bed frames for them.

An effective tip we suggest is to get your child involved. Kids love looking at beds, especially when they get the opportunity to jump up and down on mattresses and demand their favourite colour. If you get them involved from the outset, (maybe give them a few options) they will get excited about their new bed, and will be thrilled when it comes to their bedtime and they are able to test out their new bed for the first time.

Ensuring that you and your child choose a bed which you both approve of may be difficult, but Buy Beds Online have a vast collection of childrens metal bed frames to help solve your conundrum. If you have two siblings then bunk beds are a fantastic choice.
