Questions about IR extenders/repeaters and xbox's

Long story short, I've recently moved and have decided to centralize the A/V equipment for my place into one room (The computer room). I own the place, the cable runs are fairly short (Longest run is a 40 ft. HDMI cable) and I have easy access to run them all under the floors through the basement. Everything is pretty well planned out already, except for the remote control aspect. My dilemma is that there are a number of ways I could do it, but I'm not sure which would be the best - in the terms of cost-effectiveness and being able to take the system with me if we suddenly move again (I hope that makes sense). Basically, my main issues are the xbox's and the audio receiver. The master bedroom uses an xbox 360 as an extender for everything, and the TV is wall mounted. No problem with the HDMI run, but transmitting the IR signal for the xbox to the computer room is where I could use some advice. The living room is a similar situation, except there are 2 TV's. One TV will be using the main HTPC, so no issue with that since the IR receiver will be extended with a usb cable. The second TV though, uses an xbox 360, so once again I need to transmit the remote signals to the computer room. The living room will also have the 5.1 surround sound setup, so I am considering moving the receiver to the computer room as well. I'm not too sure of this though, because for some reason it feels really weird not having a dial or number to look at to tell me what the volume level is... Maybe it's just me... My first thought was to use a spare MCE IR receiver and power it through the xbox usb port. Using one of those IR cables that has a diode on one end and a 1/8 inch mono jack on the other end, I plugged the 1/8 in jack into the IR receiver, the flashing diode over the IR sensor on the xbox, and the USB cable of the IR receiver into the xbox USB port. No-go, IR receiver wasn't even getting power. I then tried powering the IR receiver using a computer, which got me power to the IR receiver, but still no response from the xbox. I then cut the IR cable and switched the wires around as a hail mary, but still no dice. No idea what I'm doing wrong with this... My next thought was to try to just "extend" the IR sensor on the xbox. I have some 25ft headphone extension cables laying around, so I figured I could use them and just add headphone male/female jacks to the xbox and IR sensor as a "semi-removable extension".
