Honda and Yamaha take MotoGP battle Stateside

MONTEREY, California — MotoGP points leader Casey Stoner will try to reprise his 2007 Laguna Seca victory Sunday as his Honda team take their duel with Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha Stateside.

Australia's Stoner has twice earned pole and notched one victory and three podium finishes in five appearances at Laguna Seca, and his pole-winning lap in 2008 of 1:20.700 remains the northern California circuit's record.

"The track itself is a very tight and technical track, there are lots of sweeping gradients and unusual corners with a lot of camber, so you need to be delicate on the track and not 'attack' it too much," said Stoner, winner of four races so far this season.

The California race will cap a period of six races in eight weeks, and Stoner would like nothing more than to consolidate his position atop the standings, with 168 points to Lorenzo's 153, as the teams head into a three-week break before the August 14 Czech Grand Prix.

"It has been a pretty tiring few weeks and we have another back-to-back race now, but I love going to America," added Stoner, who was third last weekend in the German Grand Prix won by teammate Dani Pedrosa.

In 2007, Stoner piloted a Ducati to victory at Laguna Seca, while now the Ducati team's fortunes are in the hands of Italian great Valentino Rossi and American Nicky Hayden.

While Rossi is lying fourth in the standings, Ducati are wrestling with technical issues and both riders expect to have both the GP11 and the newer GP11.1 bikes at their disposal for comparison purposes.

"I think that we?ll try to use both versions on Friday so that we can compare them and do some work for both the near term and the future, because we want to learn as much as possible," Rossi said.

"We?re aware that it could be difficult because we?ll also have to be preparing for the race, but we think that in order to improve our bike, it?s important to try everything possible."

Spain's Lorenzo, who edged Stoner into second place at the Sachsenring in a thrilling final lap, triumphed last year at Laguna Seca from pole position. The desire for a repeat - and a chance to gain on Stoner - had him looking forward to Sunday.

"We are very strong at the moment with a great result at both Mugello and Sachsenring. We will try to continue to reduce our gap to Casey," said Lorenzo, who has fond memories not only of his victory last year but also of his pole position and podium finish he earned despite a crash in 2009.
