AISD workers watch each other's backs in high heat
When Abilene school district maintenance workers are toiling outside in the hot conditions this summer, they usually work in pairs so they can keep an eye on each other.
Carlos Rodriguez, the school district's physical plant coordinator, said it is easy for a person working in the heat not to notice he may be suffering from a heat-related problem. But if employees work in pairs, then both workers are safer.
That's just one of the precautions school district workers take to stay safe in the heat.
In most school buildings not in use over the summer, the air conditioning is turned off as part of an energy savings plan.
Rodriguez said when workers are going to spend the day working in a building, the air conditioning is turned on but the thermostat is set around 80 degrees.
He said that while 80 degrees isn't cool, it is significantly cooler than the 100-plus degree weather we've experienced this summer.
When maintenance workers have to spend time on a roof working on heating and cooling systems or on a remodeling project, they start at 6 a.m. while temperatures are at the lowest point during the day, Rodriguez said.
Then, around noon when it starts heating up, the workers will stop working on that project for the day. If they're not finished, they'll return the next day.
Rodriguez said workers are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, and each work truck is equipped with a water jug.
Some of the illnesses caused by extreme heat include heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rash. Symptoms include dizziness, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headaches and cold/clammy skin, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The most life-threatening heat-related illness is heat stroke, which causes approximately 400 deaths nationwide each year. The condition occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature, which rises quickly without the ability to cool down. If emergency treatment is not provided, heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability.
The high temperatures had little effect on summer school classes this year, according to school district spokesman Phil Ashby.
Elementary school students didn't take long recess breaks but mostly stayed inside during morning classes.
At the middle school and high school, students also just took short breaks from class and pretty much stayed in air-conditioned buildings, Ashby said.
