CALL me a beauty snob but when Linco, the original maker of beer-based haircare, announced it was stopping production of its boozy shampoo and conditioner last month I was too busy working up a lather with Herbal Essences to notice.

Perhaps I should have paid more attention. It turns out Superdrug was inundated with so many complaints from disappointed shoppers that the high-street chemist decided it would launch its own hops-based haircare range this autumn.

Beer rinses are an age-old ritual which are said to give lifeless hair body and shine. However until the new products hit the shelves devoted fans of this unusual beauty treatment will have to improvise with the real thing instead.

Inspired by this unlikely comeback I wondered if traditional larder-based beauty remedies could measure up to today’s sophisticated grooming standards.

As a beauty writer I’m addicted to trying out the newest lotions and treatments and have a complicated and expensive beauty routine which I stick to religiously. I decided to experiment and for seven days shelve my shop-bought lotions and potions in favour of natural, home-made alternatives.

For advice on how to use my larder to look good I turned to natural beauty expert and author Star Khechara who specialises in make-your-own skincare.

“It’s common for beauty brands to brag about using superfoods such as honey and olive oil,” she explains. “However once these ingredients have been through the manufacturing process the finished product is never as potent as using the real thing instead.”

Star gave up on shop-bought beauty remedies 18 years ago in favour of products made from pure ingredients. For someone who looks 10 years younger than her 36 years she’s a convincing advert for kitchen-cupboard beauty alongside its money-saving and eco-friendly potential too.

On day one, since I was having porridge for breakfast anyway, I rustled up some aromatic oaty washbags for the week ahead. I poured a few tablespoons of oats into the centre of a piece of muslin cloth. To add some scent I threw in some dried orange peel and mixed spice before tying it up with a piece of ribbon.

Once immersed in water the pouch oozed a soothing milk which was a perfect natural cleanser. Rubbed over my skin it was just as efficient as shower gel and as oats are famed for helping skin absorb and retain water the fragrant parcel worked to counteract the dehydrating effects of my daily shower.
