USA. Students build Yanmar powered vehicles for needy countries

When Calera, Alabama high school teacher Brian Copes challenged his students to build a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) to help others, little did he know to what heights they would soar.  For five years now, his Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students have beat college teams in a BUV competition hosted by the Institute for Affordable Transportation (IAT).  Mastry Engine Center helped make the Calera project possible by donating Yanmar engines and offering technical support. Copes modeled his STEM class after the Discovery Channel series, Monster Garage.  He told the teenagers, "I want you guys to become modern-day Henry Fords."  BUVs are simple, low-cost vehicles for people in developing nations.  They often use basic industrial engines and simple framing that can be easily assembled and repaired in poor or remote areas. The STEM class took off like gangbusters, with kids also voluntarily working on each year's BUV before and after school.  It has transformed some children from hating school to loving to learn, while developing them into leaders.  "These projects are great, but what they're doing for the kids is even better," said Copes.  "They're learning about community service as they give of their time and talents to people they probably will never meet." This year, Copes asked his students to utilize parts readily available worldwide for their BUV.  Designed to be serviced with hand tools by those with limited skills, the 10' L x 4' W creation uses a frame of water pipe, an old Toyota Corolla front suspension and common 14" diameter wheels.  The BUV's Yanmar engine runs on diesel, a common global fuel. This lightweight vehicle is extremely versatile.  The passenger seat flips forward to hold longer materials such as lumber or a stretcher.  Its tailgate slides forward to create a second row of rear-facing seats, with a luggage rack inserted into a hitch receiver serving as a safe footrest.  "If Mastry hadn't gotten involved and believed in these kids, I don't know if the projects would be here today," said Copes. That Calera High School won the IAT competition in the Open Class four years in a row is no mean feat, particularly when up against powerhouse engineering colleges.
